Trump announces zero tariff on generic medicines for 2 years, 200% thereafter

US President Donald Trump has announced that imported generic medicines will remain tariff-free for two years, until August 1, 2028. A 100% tariff will then apply for one year, followed by a 200% tariff from August 1, 2029, from then onwards. Trump said the phased measure is intended to encourage pharmaceutical companies to manufacture generic drugs within the United States.
