Typhoid-causing bacteria becoming resistant to key antibiotics: Lancet study

Typhoid-causing bacteria are becoming increasingly resistant to key antibiotics, including azithromycin, a widely used macrolide antibiotic, Lancet study stated. A genome analysis of over 7,500 S. Typhi samples revealed that the resistant strains, many of which originate in South Asia, have spread to other parts nearly 200 times since 1990. Typhoid causes over 1,00,000 deaths per year worldwide.
