Ukraine may have to cede territory to keep EU hopes alive: Merz

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said Ukraine may have to accept territorial losses in a future peace deal with Russia, linking such concessions to ‌the country's prospects for joining the European Union. Merz stated that Ukraine cannot join the bloc while at war. Ukraine's EU accession progress had ​been blocked by Hungary's PM Viktor Orban, who was recently defeated in elections.
