UN accuses Asia-Pacific nations of censorship amid COVID-19 pandemic

A dozen countries in the Asia-Pacific region have seen an alarming clampdown on freedom of expression, tightening of censorship, amid COVID-19 pandemic, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet said. Laws to stop fake news are being used to deter legitimate speech, especially public debate, criticism of government policy and suppress freedom of expression, she added.
