UN Labour Organisation approves first global gig work standards

The International Labour Organisation (ILO) has approved the first binding employment standards for gig workers, covering sectors such as ride-hailing and food delivery. The rules aim to strengthen worker protections by limiting the use of independent contractor classifications that bypass wage and benefit obligations. The convention was backed by 406 members, while eight voted against it.
