Unchecked AI progress may pose catastrophic risks: UN panel

AI capabilities are advancing faster than scientific understanding and governments' ability to respond, a report by UN's Independent International Scientific Panel on AI said, noting AI task complexity is doubling every 4-7 months. It warned AI's deceptive behaviour raises concerns and current science can't guarantee AI will not cause catastrophic harm, either on its own or due to malicious users.
