The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) held its first session on January 17, 1946, at Westminster, London. One of the six principal organs of the UN, the Council is responsible for maintaining international peace and security. It comprises 15 member states including five permanent ones, namely China, France, Russian Federation, the United Kingdom and the United States.
