English astronomer William Hershel discovered Uranus, the seventh planet from the sun, on March 13, 1781. This was the first planet to be discovered by a telescope. The gas giant orbits the sun once every 84 Earth-years and is the only planet to spin perpendicular to its solar orbital plane. It is also the third-largest planet of the solar system.
