US President Barack Obama has declared Venezuela a national security threat and imposed sanctions on seven officials. "We are deeply concerned by the Venezuelan government's efforts to escalate intimidation of its political opponents. Venezuela's problems cannot be solved by criminalising dissent," the White House said in a statement. Venezuela alleged the US was trying to topple its government.
