US lighthouse located 40 km from land is known as the world's loneliest place

Known as the 'loneliest place in the world', the Stannard Rock Lighthouse is located about 40 kilometres away from any land in sight, making it the most distant lighthouse in the US. The nearest land to the 78-foot-tall sandstone lighthouse is Manitou Island. The tower has seven levels and includes a kitchen along with sleeping quarters and a library-reading room.
