US man jailed 49 yrs in first-ever transgender hate crime

In the first-ever transgender hate crime prosecution in the US, a Mississippi man, Joshua Vallum, has been sentenced to 49 years in prison for the murder of his former transgender girlfriend in 2015. Vallum decided to kill her fearing that he could face retribution if word spread that she was a transgender woman, prosecutors said.
