US prisoner who had 8 last meals dies after 70 years in jail

Francis Clifford Smith, who was served a final meal eight times before each execution was stayed, has died aged 101. Convicted of murder in 1950, he always maintained his innocence, while doubts over the case emerged after witnesses recanted and another inmate confessed. Smith spent more than 70 years behind bars and became known as the "Birdman of Osborn".
