US troops deployed to Alaska island amid spike in Russian activity

About 130 US soldiers were deployed to the Shemya island in Alaska following a spike in Russian military activity. The deployment came after at least eight Russian military planes and four navy vessels, including two submarines, were travelling close to Alaska as Russia and China conducted joint military drills. None of the planes breached US airspace.
