Uttarakhand glaciers retreating by 23 metres annually, study finds

A study mapping Uttarakhand's Central Himalayan glaciers from 1990 to 2024 found they are retreating at an average of 23.23 metres annually. Khatling Glacier recorded the fastest retreat at 88 metres per year, while some glaciers retreated by around 3.7 metres. Researchers linked the varying rates to rising temperatures, glacier characteristics and topography.
