Princess Victoria Gouramma, daughter of Chikka Virarajendra, last ruler of the Kodagu (Coorg) kingdom, lived a life marked by personal hardship, cultural dislocation, and forces of British colonial ambition. Fascinated by the Gouramma, Queen Victoria, took her under her wing, renamed her Victoria Gouramma after herself In 1852 and got her baptised into Christianity at Buckingham Palace.
