What are the origins of Kumbh Mela?

Kumbh Mela traces its origins to Hindu text Rigveda. 'Kumbh' means pitcher/pot and Kumbh Mela's story revolves around 'samudra manthan' (ocean churning), which was done by Gods and demons to obtain 'amrit'- elixir of immortality. According to mythology, Lord Indra's son ran off with the pot of amrit and the elixir fell in four spots- Prayagraj, Haridwar, Nashik and Ujjain.
