What are the rights of a person if he or she is detained by police?

As per law, being detained isn't the same as being arrested. The person must be produced before the nearest Magistrate within 24 hours of being detained, excluding the travelling time. He/She has the right to ask for a lawyer and the right to remain silent. A woman can be detained only by a policewoman, only before sunset and after sunrise.
