As per the India Meteorological Department, transportation or prevalence of hot dry air over a region is a favourable condition for a heatwave. The absence of moisture in the upper atmosphere, cloudless skies and large amplitude anti-cyclonic flow over the area also cause heatwaves. IMD has predicted heatwave conditions in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Rajasthan and UP on May 20.
