What do different-coloured number plates on vehicles in India indicate?

A red number plate indicates that the vehicle has temporary registration status and allows it to legally operate on public roads before the RTO issues a permanent registration number. Green number plates are used for electric vehicles, while yellow number plates are meant for commercial vehicles. Black number plates are for self-driven rental cars, and white are for private vehicles.
