What happened in the last West Bengal elections and how close was the BJP-TMC fight?

The 2021 West Bengal Assembly election was a high-stakes contest mainly between Mamata Banerjee’s TMC and BJP. TMC secured a victory by winning 215 seats in the 294-member Assembly. The BJP, however, registered a major rise in the state compared to earlier elections. From winning just three seats in 2016, the party expanded its footprint to 77 seats in 2021.
