Venezuela was hit by two back-to-back earthquakes of magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 on Wednesday. This phenomenon is known as “doublet earthquake”, where two quakes of similar magnitude occur within a short interval and originate from related fault systems. It happens when stress released during the first earthquake’s fault movement quickly transfers to a nearby fault, triggering another major earthquake.
