What is BIMSTEC and why was it formed?

BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation) is a regional organisation established in 1997. It has seven members: India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Nepal, Bhutan and Myanmar. The grouping was formed to promote economic cooperation among Bay of Bengal nations, combat terrorism, respond to natural disasters, and eradicate poverty across the region.
