China's gesture of giving pandas to foreign nations to boost its international image and improve ties is known as "panda diplomacy". Its origin is traced to Tang Dynasty(618-907 CE) and has gained momentum since 1949, when the People's Republic of China was established. Since 1984, China has stopped gifting pandas and started loaning them instead due to their falling numbers.
