What is coal gasification, the tech India is betting on to curb import bill?

Government approved ₹37,500-crore scheme for the promotion of coal gasification projects as part of its push to curb fuel imports and strengthen energy security. It is a thermochemical process that converts coal or lignite into synthesis gas, commonly known as syngas. This gas can be used to produce downstream products like methanol, ammonium nitrate, synthetic natural gas (SNG) and fertilisers.
