Marburg virus disease (MVD), which was detected in Uganda, is clinically similar to Ebola and has a fatality rate of 88%. The virus can cause severe haemorrhagic fever, damaging blood vessels and impairing the body's ability to clot blood. The virus, carried by Egyptian fruit bats, can spread through direct contact with an infected person's body fluids.
