Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty is a plan for any country that wishes to exit the European Union in accordance with its own constitutional requirements. The article gives negotiators two years from the date of its notification to conclude new arrangements. Before Article 50 was agreed upon, there was no formal mechanism for a country to leave the EU.
