The stampede which claimed six lives at Vishnu Nivasam in Tirupati took place during distribution of tokens for darshan. Thousands of devotees had gathered at counters, with TTD chairman BR Naidu saying the stampede was triggered when the gate was opened to let out an unwell woman but the crowd surged forward all at once, leading to chaos.
