API gravity, short for American Petroleum Institute gravity, makes crude oil produced by different nations different. The higher the API value, the lighter the crude, which means it costs less for refineries to remove sulphur from such oil. This then translates to more value per barrel. An API of more than 10 means that such an oil floats on water.
