What makes indelible ink so difficult to remove?

The indelible ink mark, used during elections in India, was first introduced in 1962. Silver nitrate, the main constituent of the ink, is caustic to skin. It reacts with natural salts in the skin and turns into silver chloride within 40 seconds. Once silver chloride is formed, the semi-permanent can't be washed away with water and can remain for days.
