What was India's inheritance tax law which was abolished in 1985?

An inheritance tax law existed in India until ex-PM Rajiv Gandhi-led government scrapped it in 1985. It was introduced in 1953 under Estate Duty Act to reduce economic disparity. Estate duty was imposed on the value of an individual's property at the time of their demise. The tax had to be paid when the property was passed on to heirs.
