What was the pink glow seen around Sun during total solar eclipse?

The pink or reddish glow visible around the Sun during the total solar eclipse was caused by solar prominences, huge loops of hot plasma extending from the Sun's surface into its atmosphere. They become visible during totality because the Moon blocks the Sun's bright photosphere. Their pink-red colour mainly comes from glowing hydrogen gas, which emits strongly at specific wavelengths.
