WhatsApp banned 9,400+ users over digital arrest since Jan: Centre

WhatsApp has banned over 9,400 accounts linked to digital arrest scams in India during a 12-week probe from January 2026, the Centre told the Supreme Court. The disclosure was made in ongoing suo motu proceedings concerning the spread of scams. Meanwhile, WhatsApp is planning to bring a warning feature for calls from "newly created" accounts to combat digital arrest scams.
