Where did the phrase 'roses are red, violets are blue' come from?

The phrase 'roses are red, violets are blue' can be traced back to an epic poem 'The Faerie Queene' written in England by Edmund Spenser in 1590. In 1784, it was popularised in the nursery rhyme book Gammer Gurton's Garland which had the version: 'The rose is red, the violet's blue/ The honey’s sweet, and so are you'.
