Which are the main ethnic & religious groups in Syria?

The three prominent religious groups in Syria are Sunni Muslims, who make up about 70% of the country's population, Shias and Alawites, which is a minority esoteric sect of Islam to which ex-President Bashar al-Assad belonged. Kurdish people make up Syria's largest ethnic minority community at about 2.5 million. Yazidis, a Kurdish-speaking religious minority, and Christians also reside in Syria.
