American chemist Karl Barry Sharpless, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry on Wednesday, and in 2001, is the fifth individual to be awarded two Nobel Prizes. Besides him, Nobel Prize laureates John Bardeen, Marie Skłodowska-Curie, Linus Pauling and Frederick Sanger have won two Nobel Prizes each. Curie became the first person to receive two Nobel Prizes in 1911.
