Who controls the Panama Canal which connects Atlantic & Pacific Oceans?

The Panama Canal is an artificial waterway connecting the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Completed in 1914, it was controlled and administered by the US for much of the 20th century. As American presence generated opposition in Panama, US President Jimmy Carter and Panama’s Omar Torrijos signed treaties in 1977 for its gradual transfer, with Panama assuming full control in 1999.
