Who is Asif Merchant, convicted of Iran-backed plot to kill Trump?

Asif Merchant, a 47-year-old Pakistani man and ex-banker with a failed banana business, was convicted for plotting to assassinate US President Donald Trump in an alleged Iran-backed operation. Merchant began working with Iranian operatives in Pakistan in 2022 or 2023. He travelled to Iran to meet his handler, Mehrdad Yousef, before being sent to US in 2024 to arrange assassinations.
