Who is Bashar al-Assad, Syrian President overthrown after 24-year rule?

Bashar al-Assad became Syria's President in 2000 after his father, former President Hafez al-Assad, died. He oversaw crackdown on a Syrian pro-democracy revolt that began in 2011, triggering the formation of various armed rebel groups, and ultimately a civil war which has killed over 6 lakh. He has been overthrown as rebel groups captured capital Damascus, ending his 24-year reign.
