Joseph Aoun, who was elected as Lebanon's President by parliament after a two-year deadlock, had been serving as the country's army chief since 2017. Born to a Maronite Christian family in 1964, Aoun is the fifth Lebanese army commander to be elected as President. Aoun, who has a degree in political science, has been backed by US and Saudi Arabia.
