Why are carbonated beverages called 'soft drinks'?

A video states that the term soft drink refers to flavoured carbonated beverages but originally was used for drinks that didn't contain a significant amount of alcohol. The term was made universal after carbonated beverage makers started facing issues in marketing the product, due to the fact that the drinks were called by different names in different places.
