In Nepal, the five-day Hindu festival of Tihar includes Kukur Tihar, or the 'Day of the Dogs'. On this day, dogs are honoured with garlands and a ceremonial tika. Families offer them treats, including meat and milk. In Hinduism, dogs are considered messengers of Yama, god of death, and treating them well is believed to bring blessings and good fortune.
