Why did 150 earthquakes hit Japan in less than a day?

Around 150 smaller earthquakes were reported on Japan's Noto Peninsula in less than a day after the 7.6-magnitude earthquake. There are a number of active faults off Noto Peninsula, with the compression pushing underground plates together and forcing them one above the other. This is known as a reverse-type fault mechanism. Earthquakes have increased in the area since 2018.
