Why did PM Modi ask Indian citizens to recycle gold?

PM Narendra Modi last month urged citizens to recycle idle gold instead of relying solely on newly imported gold. India spent approximately $72.4 billion in 2025-26 to meet gold demand. Organised gold recycling can reduce dependence on imports, ease pressure on foreign exchange reserves, narrow current account deficit, and support government's broader push towards self-reliance, an expert said.
