Why did Saudi Arabia ban alcohol in 1952?

Saudi Arabia banned alcohol in 1952 after a 1951 incident involving King Abdulaziz's (Ibn Saud) son Mishari bin Abdulaziz. Prince Mishari became intoxicated and used a shotgun to kill British vice consul Cyril Ousman in Jeddah. King Abdulaziz offered Ousman's wife the right to determine the prince's method of execution, however, she refused and accepted a financial compensation of $70,000.
