Why did SpiceJet flights from Dubai return without a single passenger?

SpiceJet operated empty flights from Dubai this week as passengers weren't allowed to check in because of the airline's unpaid dues. Emirati airport services provider dnata reportedly told SpiceJet that they could either provide passenger facilitation or fuel. The airline wanted to utilise the aircraft for other scheduled flights and chose to fly its planes back to India without passengers.
