Why do calligraphy beetles have patterns on their shells?
Calligraphy beetles have intricate black lines and dots on their shells, often compared to Arabic, Chinese, or cursive calligraphy. These markings help the beetles camouflage themselves in their surroundings, making it harder for birds and lizards to detect them, a phenomenon known as disruptive coloration. The patterns also allow the beetles to blend into leaves, bark and lichen.
