Why do doctors advise against using ear cleaning buds?

Doctors advise against using cotton ear buds/swabs, stating that ears have a self-cleaning mechanism. Ear canal is lined with tiny hair and glands that produce earwax which traps dust and microorganisms. Swabs often push earwax deeper into the ear canal, causing discomfort and pain. Skin inside the ear canal is delicate and swabs can cause cuts, which can get infected.
