Why do new buildings mark glass doors with 'X' mark?

Modern architectural glass is extremely transparent, and it can be difficult to tell whether a panel is installed or not and can result in accidents. Construction workers carry ladders, iron rods across site and if glass panel isn't visible, there is a risk of hitting or damaging it accidentally. The 'X' tape marks make barrier obvious and help prevent impact.
