A Brown University study found pupils widen when surprise puts the brain on alert. Unexpected events trigger the locus coeruleus, releasing norepinephrine and weakening old expectations. They said the response acts like a "refresh" button, in turn helping people quickly process new situations, reduce bias, learn from changes and make better predictions about what is most likely to happen next.
