Why do people suddenly wake up at 3 am sometimes?

UK-based NHS general practitioner Dr Amir Khan said waking at 3 am can be linked to cortisol. When in stress, body experiences higher cortisol levels. Instead of natural dip at night, it stays up, disturbing sleep quality. Cortisol levels naturally increase around 3-4 am. However, stress pushes early morning cortisol even higher. This spike jolts one awake at 3 am.
